How to Shorten Your Resume to One Page

Shorten a resume with a worked before-and-after edit: combine repeated bullets, trim older roles, and adjust spacing while keeping the page readable.

When only a few lines spill onto a second page, check for repeated content before making the type smaller. A duplicated bullet or a long summary may be easier to cut than the spacing the whole document needs.

First confirm whether one page is required. Follow an employer’s stated length limit. Otherwise, use the space needed to describe relevant experience clearly; a one-page target is an editing choice, not a universal rule tied to years of experience.

Start with the repeated work

This fictional product designer is applying for a role involving design systems and interface work. They were promoted at Kestrel in April 2023. Their draft describes the same responsibilities more than once:

Before:

Senior Product Designer — Kestrel · Apr 2023 – Present

  • Owns the design system used by three product teams
  • Maintains the shared design system for those three teams
  • Reviews designs before engineering handoff
  • Works with engineering on handoff by reviewing the designs

Product Designer — Kestrel · Jun 2020 – Mar 2023

  • Designed account settings screens
  • Prepared those screens and their interaction notes for engineering handoff
  • Maintained shared components in the design system

The first two senior-role bullets describe ownership and maintenance of one system. The next two repeat the design reviews. In the earlier role, the screens and their handoff notes belong to the same task.

After:

Senior Product Designer — Kestrel · Apr 2023 – Present

  • Owns and maintains the design system used by three product teams
  • Reviews designs before engineering handoff

Product Designer — Kestrel · Jun 2020 – Mar 2023

  • Designed account settings screens and prepared them with interaction notes for engineering handoff
  • Maintained shared design-system components

Seven bullets become four. Both titles and date ranges remain, and the earlier contribution to shared components is still distinct from later ownership of the system. The promotion stays visible.

The combined account-settings bullet is longer than either original line. Check how it wraps in your preview: combining bullets removes repetition, but the space saved depends on the wording and layout.

When reviewing your own consecutive roles, put a project’s main description under the role where it happened. Keep a later bullet when the responsibility changed, as it does here from maintaining components to owning the system. For a more substantial rewrite, check the action against the source.

Give older roles space according to relevance

This designer also has an earlier UI role at Fenwick Studio and a junior print-design role at Aldgate Print. The Fenwick interface work is relevant to the application, so its project detail stays. The print role can be a compact entry with the title, employer, and dates if its tasks add nothing the posting asks for.

Make that decision separately for each role. An older project may supply the exact experience missing from the recent entries. Keep a fuller version in your master document so another application can use it.

Shorten the summary and supporting sections

A summary often repeats information already visible in the first role. Here is another cut using the same designer’s experience:

Before:

Product designer with experience in account settings and shared design systems. A motivated team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment.

After:

Product designer with experience in account settings and shared design systems.

The remaining sentence introduces the relevant work. If it adds little beside the heading and first role, omit the summary entirely.

Check the smaller blocks too:

  • Education: Keep the qualification, institution, and dates. Shorten course descriptions that repeat skills demonstrated in Experience. Label an unfinished course accurately if you include it.
  • Contact details: Put items on one line where they fit comfortably. Keep the email and portfolio readable; a long address or name may need extra space.
  • Skills: Keep tools and methods relevant to the posting. Remove duplicates and items already described clearly elsewhere when space is tight.

Hold the font, paper size, margins, and spacing steady during these content edits. Compare the page count after each change. That shows whether the words you removed actually helped, before you start adjusting the layout.

Adjust the preview after the content edits

In ExportMyResume, the Customize panel includes text size, line spacing, section spacing, page margin, typeface, and paper size.

Try one setting at a time:

  • Tighten section spacing if large gaps separate short sections.
  • Adjust line spacing while checking that multiline bullets remain easy to follow.
  • Try a smaller page margin if extra width could reduce wrapping.
  • Compare Modern and Classic typefaces; their different letter widths can change line breaks.
  • Reduce text size only if the result is still comfortable at actual size.
  • Set A4 or Letter for the intended document before judging its length.

There is no automatic “fit to one page” command or manual page-break control. Watch the preview and page count after each adjustment. A narrow change can move a whole block, so don’t assume a particular setting always saves one line.

Check the result at actual size

Read the smallest text at 100% zoom or print a copy. Confirm that the headings stand out and that adjacent bullets don’t merge visually. If the page has become dense, restore some spacing and reconsider a content block. If relevant experience still needs two pages and no length limit applies, keep two readable pages.

PDF and Word downloads require Pro. Free for now during the launch offer: sign in to download PDF or Word without a subscription. Plain text is also free, and signing in enables PNG without a watermark. Open the exported file before sending it. Word can reflow the DOCX, so a one-page PDF preview does not establish a one-page Word document. Use the format the employer accepts, then check its page count in that format.

For a specific defect such as an isolated heading or an unexpectedly large gap, diagnose the formatting symptom before changing more settings.
